They honour the achievements of nonprofit leaders, philanthropists and community organizations that embody the spirit of community innovation, capacity building, leadership and social prosperity. Their passion for our community and their dedication to improving the quality of life explain why they are the heart of Wood Buffalo.

Join us on June 6th from 7-10 pm at the Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts at Holy Trinity High School to find out who the winners will be! In addition to receiving a beautiful, hand crafted award sculpture, award winners will each receive a $5,000 cash prize to be donated to the Wood Buffalo nonprofit community organization of their choice.

The 2012 Heart of Wood Buffalo Leadership Awards is proudly presented by Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo and the Suncor Energy Foundation in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Volunteer Wood Buffalo, Leadership Wood Buffalo, Nonprofit Sector Link Wood Buffalo, the Fort McMurray Food Bank Association and the United Way of Fort McMurray.

Join keynote speaker, Ian Hill – Founder & Volunteer CEO of Let them Be Kids and emcee Russell Thomas in celebrating excellence and honouring the achievements in our nonprofit sector!

Ian Hill – Keynote:
Business Leader, and Award Winning Humanitarian, these are some of the words that often used when referring to Ian Hill. Whether running a multi-million dollar business operation with over 1000 employees, to spearheading first of their kind life-changing community projects, to a unique Canadian-wide initiative. Ian Hill has been recognized for being a catalyst for positive change throughout North America. Today, Ian’s main focus is His humanitarian effort, “Let Them Be Kids” (http://www.ltbk.ca/kids/), of which he is the Founder and Volunteer Chairman of the Board of Directors. Let Them Be Kids is a Canadian wide non-profit organization created to build stronger communities on the grassroots level, while building playgrounds, skate parks and fitness parks in areas of need. 148 Communities across Canada have been impacted through this effort in the last four years. Most recently Ian’s Let Them Be Kids program was nominated for the Prime Minister’s National Volunteer Organization of the Year award.

Russell Thomas – Emcee:
Director of Marketing & Communications at Keyano College, a first term municipal councillor, and a member of the Social Prosperity Wood Buffalo steering committee, Russell Thomas is passionate about our community and it’s potential. Russell is also a graduate of the inaugural Leadership Wood Buffalo class, an active alum, and a member of the board. Especially passionate about the arts, Russell recently appeared as David Sarnoff in the Keyano Theatre Company production of The Farnsworth Invention. He also enjoys painting striking water colour portraits when time allows and writing on his Middle Age Bulge blog http://middleagebulge.blogspot.ca/. He was recently featured as one of the presenters at the TEDx Fort McMurray event sharing his passion for social media.
