Every board, big and small, needs ongoing training to ensure their organization is well run and can withstand public scrutiny. Participants will learn about effective board governance systems, processes and best practices, and also how to work more successfully together.

This workshop is intended for non-profit board leaders and senior management who wish to learn more about effective board governance systems, processes and best practices, and also how to work more successfully together. The workshop will be tailored to meet the needs of participants and will address topics such as:

Defining governance – creating common understanding and expectations
• Purpose of governance
• Critical board success factors
• Where a Board fits and what it does

Defining the Board’s role, value and contribution
• Key board responsibilities
• How to recruit and keep your board members

Creating a decision-making framework for clarity and accountability
• Delivering on the Board’s informational needs
• How to communicate with board members for best results
• Delineating between the Board’s and Staff decision making authority
• Achieving optimal decision-making

Boardroom Culture and the Board / Staff relationships
• Working together and sharing power and control
• Share information and ask for input with least intrusion on board members’ time.
• Meeting effectiveness

Overseeing Organizational Performance
• The board’s role in strategy development
• ED performance management and compensation

Governance Commitments and Challenges
• Identifying and acting on session outcomes
• Committing to taking action on key governance issues
• Addressing potential barriers or challenges to improving governance

This workshop is offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Suncor Energy Foundation. It is a repeat of the Board Governance workshop held in June as part of the Wood Buffalo Community Building Project's 2011 Learning Conference. Breakfast, snacks and lunch will be provided.
