Urban Market starting downtown, August 28, September 11, 25

You won't have to get on the highway to grab fresh, locally grow produce to stock up your fridge.
All the best food and meat producers will be downtown for the Urban Market, a food-based farmers market accompanied by crafters, artisans and performers meant to enhance the outdoor shopping experience. "You know every market's got to have something for everybody," says RMWB Marketing and Retail Specialist, Andrew Moyer. "You got to have something for kids, something for your ears, and something for your tummy and everything else. So we want local musicians to be able to support them and make it a weekly community event out there." Moyer says people he's spoken too are already excited about the market. It's not just the buyers and sellers, but the downtown community that's eagerly awaiting the experience. There's been a long-time demand for a community market in Wood Buffalo. Moyer says it common to have farmers set up shop for the day. "How the farmer retail works in Fort McMurray, it's a little bit renegade where these farmers. Whether its veg guys or meat guys, will come from their farms and try to negotiate a deal in some private parking lot to be there for a couple of hours, so they tweet where they're going to be. They realize the need in Fort McMurray, there's just no central place to gather."
Urban Markets will be held outside of Municipal building on August 28, September 11 and 25.

Hermitage Park also has plans to set up something similar. It was going to start this summer prior to the the flooding. I hope they are going to actually look into the people setting up at this urban market though. In this town I wouldn't be surprised to see some scam artist going to a place like Extra Foods and claiming to be a farmer selling fresh farm produce.

Personally I have taken the time to look up some of the farmers who come to town on a regular basis. Since we hear about E coli contamination, aka poop, so often now in commercial meat I stopped buying it. Currently I deal with two farms that come up here on a regular basis.

For beef products I buy from Rose Ridge Farms owned by Nelson Boychuk. He has been coming here for several years on a monthly basis, except during winter. His animals are grass fed (no grain) and drug free. While his products cost more you get a much superior product and no poop. He also brings up eggs from his farm and produce from a greenhouse operation near him. His farm has a web site http://www.weraisedthesteaks.com/index.html and you can ask him to add you to his mailing list where he sends out an email to tell you where and when he is set up each month plus any specials he is having. He is usually open Saturday and Sunday when he arrives. When winter approaches you can order a side or quarter of beef to get you through to the spring if you have a large freezer. He has a price list for many of his products but you can pretty much ask for anything to be put together with advanced notice.

A new regular in town is Mandy Melnyk from Meadow Creek farms. She raises free range/drug free pigs, chickens, eggs and turkeys as well as growing her own produce. She also brings up organic lamb from another farm as well as a line of Ukrainian food products if you order ahead. Currently she is here every Wednesday from 2PM until 8PM in the MacDonald Island parking lot. If you are going later in the day order your products and she will hold it for you. Again, costs more but you will immediately notice the taste difference between her products and regular grocery store stuff. She is part of what is called a community supported agriculture system (http://www.meadowcreekfarms.ca/uploads/ ... -Farms.pdf ) but you don't have to join to buy from them. Her farm also has a web page http://www.meadowcreekfarms.ca/Home.php and a separate online store http://shop.meadowcreekfarms.ca/main.sc

I also hear of some Hutterites farmers (the Austrian based religious group not the Jabba the crime boss) coming up here selling chickens but I have not made my way into that inner circle of folk who know when the are coming up here. I also don't know the background of the farms where the chickens are raised. If I do find out I'll be sure to post it for all to see.
