ACFN Receiving Grant To Help Reduce Emissions, Lower Utility Expenses, And Increase Energy Efficiency
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation is looking to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency and lower utility expenses.

The ACFN is receiving a $636,460 grant from the provincial government to help the northern hamlet build a new local grocery store and six family homes.

These buildings will be built with upgraded energy-efficiency features which will prevent up to 90 tonnes of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere and save the community 25 per cent in electricity and heating costs per year over the next 25 years.

"Being able to build these projects to be energy-efficient will save our community money and help combat climate change,” said Chief Allan Adam.

“Energy-efficient homes will lower the cost of utilities and an energy-efficient grocery store will reduce operating costs. Those savings can be reflected in prices so people can eat healthy for less, which hasn't always been possible in our remote community."

The funds are a part of Alberta’s Indigenous Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program while coming from the province’s $35 million they’ve allocated for projects like this in 2018.
