AER Approves Syncrude’s Tailings Management Plan

The Alberta Energy Regulator is approving Syncrude’s tailings management plan for a mine north of Fort McMurray.

In a report released on Wednesday, the AER says the application for the oil company’s Aurora mine received passing grades.

Multiple Indigenous groups were a chance to give feedback including the Fort McMurray Mtis, Fort McKay First Nation, and Mikisew Cree First Nation.

As part of the approval, Syncrude must continue conversations with stakeholders and Indigenous groups about the tailings plan, water-capping technology, and give annual updates to AER.

Despite being given the green light, there are still some concerns in their plan.

The issue stems from Syncrude’s fluid tailings volume which is expected to increase from 72 million cubic metres to 113 million, more than what’s currently allowed.

The oil company will need to provide a plan to fix this by December 31, 2018, and must provide an update by December 31, 2023.
