Alberta Liberals Demanding More From Province To Help Abasand Condo Owners

The Alberta Liberal party is calling out the NDP for not doing enough to help Abasand condo owners who are in a legal dispute with their board.

The Hillview Park Condominium barely survived the 2016 wildfire with just 14 of the 214 units still standing. However, the rebuild has been put on hold as Hillview is in a legal battle with the former company hired to help reconstruct the condo.

Thirty owners have teamed up to hire a lawyer after being told they each needed to contribute $30,000 to help cover a damage assessment of the properties.

MLA David Swann tells Fort McMurray News these owners deserve more help from the province.

“They continue to pay monthly as well as pay for a place outside of the devasted area. There’s no legal mechanism to provide legal aide or pro-bono legal services, so there in a terrible, terrible state.”

Swann says the ‘Condominium Property Act’ needs to be amended to provide better services for people in these types of situations.

Their big ask – a dispute resolution board.

“It would take this fairly common issue out of the court system and put it in an arbitration setting in the community and avoid a lot of unnecessary frustrations and cost.”

If this isn’t a possibility, Swann notes the Alberta Party would welcome low-cost legal services or Pro-Bono.

“At the very least, we should be providing some legal advice from the government.”

Currently, the owners are looking for financial help to cover legal costs – setting up a GoFundMe page.
