Aussie Rules Football On Its Way To Fort McMurray

Australian Rules Football is making its way into the RMWB.

Aussie Rules, AFL or simply footy has been growing its presence in Canada and one local resident is looking to field a professional team in Fort McMurray.

Chris Piercey is the organizer and says a team here would be the northern most footy team in all of the Americas.

He tells Fort McMurray News the game is combination of a number of other physical sports.

“Rugby meets basketball meets soccer, eliminate the offsides and play the sport on a cricket pitch and that’s pretty much the game in a nutshell. It’s a high-flying, high-endurance demanding sport.”

Piercey says he first gained interest in Aussie Rules when he stumbled upon a YouTube video showcasing the Australian Football League.

He feels it’s a good way for people to get out and get active.

“I know there are options like rugby, soccer or football but at the later ages, this is something for anybody who’s willing to make an effort, have some fun and learn something new.”

Piercey adds a team here is still a dream, as the franchise is still in an infantile stage.

Anyone interested can join up for group practices at MacDonald Island Park’s indoor turf facility at Shell Place, every Friday starting at 9 p.m.
