Balsom Not Resigning Over Conflict of Interest Concerns, Matter To Be Referred To Court

Councillor Krista Balsom isn’t resigning from her position despite a motion made earlier this week asking her to step down.

On Tuesday, council voted 6-3 to have her resign by 4:30 p.m. Thursday after an investigation found she violated the Municipal Government Act during budget deliberations.

“After close consultation with family, supporters and community members I have decided I will not be resigning,” said Balsom in a statement.

Since she plans to stay on as councillor, the municipality will instruct a law firm to bring a court application to have the matter determined by a judge at the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Balsom apologized for the inconvenience that it has caused her colleagues and constituents, but says she strongly believe’s in the principle of fairness and due process.

” I believe that I will be cleared in the fullness of time.”

The matter could take upwards of a year to conclude.

Speaking on Fort McMurray Matters on Wednesday, Mayor Don Scott says he supported the motion because the public needs to have confidence in council.

“Politics, in my view, is the highest public calling and public confidence in those who are elected is absolutely crucial. We all take an oath of office and we sign ethical guidelines, so to me, the decision that I made was really focused on public confidence.”

While Balsom will remain on council – her colleagues passed a separate motion on Tuesday which permits her from representing the RMWB at events or travel on any tax-payer funded trips until the matter is dealt with through the court.
