Booming sales for romantic gifts this February

Flowers, chocolate and candy: when it comes to Valentine's Day, Canadians are consistent in choosing their gifts.

BMO Economics finds surging sales in the traditional February 14th gifts when Valentine's Day rolls around.

Senior Economist at BMO Capital Markets, Jennifer Lee, says retail sales drop 4.4 per cent from January to February, but certain products see increases.

According to the research, jewelry sales have surged 28 per cent over the past 16 years during the month of February, and cosmetics and fragrance sales grew 20 per cent.

Candy and flowers have also been flying off of shelves, with a 15 per cent increase in sales.
