Borealis Canoe Club Creating New Mapping Tool

A new mapping tool is set to help canoers find the best spots to enjoy their sport.

Designed by the Borealis Canoe Club, the online tool outlines all rivers people can enjoy paddling along.

Speaking on Fort McMurray Matters, Board Member Scott Patterson says they wanted to help paddlers understand what’s available for them here.

“We realized that a bunch of us were new to the community and we’re all looking for information on where to go, where to put in, take out, where to camp and it wasn’t all in one place.”

When discussing local rivers – many think about the Athabasca, Clearwater, and Snye. The mapping tool will outline other rivers that people can enjoy such as the MacKay and Muskeg.

Patterson says local paddlers also got the chance to put their say into the tool.

“They got to physically grab a pen, cross off on the map – nope you guys have it totally wrong here, there’s a great camp spot here, there’s another place you can put your canoe in the river here – so now that we have that information we can take it, put it on the digital map.”

Borealis Canoe Club President Amanda Mercer adds the mapping tool will also highlight the difficulty so beginners can learn which rivers are the best to off with.

“Rivers are moving water so there’s always the possibility of things moving quickly, also lots of trees fall down in some of these skinnier rivers, you really need to be looking ahead.”

The online tool is expected to be available in the coming weeks.
