Campaign Underway To Build Facility For People With Autism

A local social-profit is launching a campaign to build a facility for people with autism in our region.

The Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in partnership with Educare Early Education has kicked off their five-year planMore Than Just Brick’s.

“So our first two years is going to be awareness building, building up a campaign, building up our committees. Then our next three years after that will be fundraising and looking for sponsors and donors,” Autism Ambassador Kirsti Mardell told Fort McMurray News.

Mardell says there’s an extreme need for a facility for people with autism in our region – which she adds became apparent during evacuation when they saw what type of resources were available in other cities.

“Everybody that is already servicing our special needs population has wait lists; they’re over capacity, they’re overworked. Professionals are able to come into the community but only for short periods of time because there is a lack of space available for them to actually practice.”

She adds the facility would allow professionals to do earlier diagnosing and early intervention, which is currently being left to the schools.

Their fundraising target is set at $3 million.

“The facility is not just limited to kids with autism it will benefit the whole community.”
