The Fort McMurray Catholic School Board is taking a gamble.
A 2011-2012 operating budget, approved last night , includes a projected deficit of 2.9 million dollars.
Superintendent Kim Jenkins says they're hopeful political forces will sway the province to improve funding in the coming year.
"Were gambling that we will be able to carry a larger deficit this year, so that we can reduce as much as possible any impact in the classroom, in the hope that it wont be as bad as we think next year, now if its then we'll have to deal with and we'll have to make some tough decisions," says Jenkins.
Non-essential building maintenance, travel and administrative costs are being slashed as the board dips into its financial reserves.
