$1M In Cocaine, Cash Seized From Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Sherwood Park

Alberta's Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) has dismantled a more than $1 million cocaine trafficking network operating out of Fort McMurray, Edmonton, and Sherwood Park.

Project Fortune launched in March 2017 after information was shared between Strathcona County RCMP and ALERT that the since-closed Barbero Barbershop in Sherwood Park was involved in cocaine trafficking.

After 16 months of investigating, seven suspects were arrested last Thursday, July 26, after search warrants were conducted at two homes in Fort McMurray and three in Edmonton.

Officers seized eight kilograms of cocaine along with $215, 000 in cash as a result.

ALERT says one of the Edmonton homes, located in the Eaux Claires neighbourhood, is believed to have been used to package and press cocaine for street-level sales.

It’s alleged the heads of the network are two Edmonton men, 27-year-old Ali Ameen Elamki and 33-year-old Mohamed Rachid Torbeih. They face a number of criminal charges, including conspiracy to traffic cocaine and committing an indictable offense for the benefit of a criminal organization.

The other five suspects, 33-year-old Jamil Mohamed Razian, 29-year-old Mohamed Mounir Torbeih both from Fort McMurray, along with 21-year-old Ryan Arthur Jones, 21-year-old Sidney Chudek, and 30-year-old Ismail Hajar, also face a number of charges for their various roles within the alleged criminal network.

In total, 49 charges have been laid.
