Community Extends Support To Legion Following Vandalism On Afghanistan Memorial

Following an act of vandalism on their LAV-III monument, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165 has received an outpour of community support.

Last Monday morning, vandals smeared white paint on the memorial – which was used in Afghanistan, causing an unnecessary headache for the local legion.

Legion President Pat Duggan calls it a simple act of cowardice that only reflects what the community does not stand for.

Duggan tells Fort McMurray News the day after the act occurred – Canadian Veterans Affairs said they’d be willing to provide funds to help with costs, if necessary.

“We had about 90-95 per cent of it already cleaned up and there’s only been minimal damage to the monument itself. Some of the paint took off the original green. But the LAV-Canada company has sent us some additional paint as well. So, hopefully, we’ll be able to get that done without any overall cost to the Legion.”

Duggan says now that work is mostly completed – they’ll start with the beautification process of the Legion – which they hope to have completed this summer.

He says since the act – support from the community and Veterans Affairs has been unbelievable.

“It’s quite humbling where the citizens, business and local politicians all reach out pretty much immediately and lend their support to us and we know if there were any further difficulties – we’ve got the back of the community, their support and their assistance, which is fantastic because they have ours.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate the vandalism.
