Council To Discuss 2017 Property Taxes

The cancellation of 2017 property taxes for homes destroyed by the wildfire is being pitched to Wood Buffalo Council.

Last week, Councilor Sheldon Germain issued a notice of motion that would cancel property taxes for homes destroyed by the wildfire.

In a Facebook post, Germain says they need to find a way to lessen the burden for those on the road to recovery.

The proposed cancellation would come into effect once the municipality passes the 2017 property tax bylaw later this year. It would last until construction is complete, the property is sold or the end of the year.

This motion follows a decision to reduce property taxes by 2 per cent last year across the board.

Council will hear the full presentation Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Jubilee Plaza.
