10 dead in Alberta influenza outbreak

10 people are dead after this season's influenza outbreak.

Alberta health Services confirmed the tragic toll during a press conference yesterday.

The deceased ranged in age from 18 to 64. Officials say some of them already suffered from underlying medical conditions before contracting H1N1.

Upwards of 300 people now in hospital , 40 of whom are currently housed in intensive care.

Chief Medical Officer James Talbot declined to call the outbreak a pandemic but confirmed that H1N1 is the prominent strain this season and urged Albertans to get immunized.

You can get your shot for free at a handful of upcoming clinics.

Nurses will be on hand daily at Fort McMurray Public Health this week, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Also, a drop-in clinic will be open at Peter Pond Mall this Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m.

Just over 20 per cent of provincial residents have opted to get the protective shot during the annual immunization campaign.
