EcoYOLO Set To Plant 2,500 Trees At Gregoire Lake Provincial Park

Around 2,500 trees will be replanted this week at Gregoire Lake Provincial Park.

EcoYOLO, along with 400 Grade 7/8 students, will be replacing the trees lost in the wildfire.

The group is comprised of students at cole McTavish who've devoted themselves to helping in the restoration of Fort McMurray.

Co-Founder Krish Shah tells Fort McMurray News planting these trees is as helpful to the environment as it is symbolic to our community.

“This fire was so devastating, being able to bring people out, plant trees to show that this is our city and we’re going to rebuild – that in itself is great.”

This will be EcoYOLO’s second event after they partnered with Tree Canada and the RMWB to help plant trees in Saprae Creek. Around 200 students came out, helping plant 1,600 trees.

“We never knew it would become this big, never thought but it’s great to help our community and give back,” said Chintan Desai, Co-Founder.

The group’s focus moving forward isn’t just about replanting trees.

Shah and Desai are hoping EcoYOLO becomes a catalyst for more students to take a stance on protecting the environment.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that we plant trees, this is just our initiatives for these past two-years, so in the future, we want to make sure students are given the opportunity to protect the environment and to learn more about how the environment is changing,” added Shah.

The two don’t know what’s the next step for them as they are heading off to high school this September.

EcoYOLO will be at Gregoire Lake Provincial Park this Friday.
