Environment Canada Calls For Hotter Than Usual Summer

With the first day of summer nearly upon us, it looks like it is going to be a long and hot one.

That’s according to Environment Canada who says we will likely see temperatures soar about 30 degrees throughout the summer.

Senior Climatologist Dave Phillips says the weather over the course of the last two months has been ever changing.

He tells Fort McMurray News the overall weather patterns in the Spring showed an immense amount of fluctuation.

“In April, it was clearly like the dead of winter. It was cold, crisp and dry and it was just a frozen kind of area and then all the sudden, nature kind of woke up and in May we saw temperatures that were four or five degrees warmer than normal.”

Phillips believes that the plus-30 temperatures will likely stick around all the way through to September.

He says they’ve been forecasting hotter than normal summer since the start of May.

“Get used to it, it’s good mojito kind of weather and we think that’s what it’s going to be like. Now, it may not stay as warm as this, but we think it will stay elevated for the rest of the summer.”

Phillips also notes despite all this summery weather – it’s vital to be prepared in case of extreme conditions such as heavy rain, lightning and thunder, hail as well as windy and tornadic conditions.

Summer in Fort McMurray officially begins on Thursday around 4 a.m.
