Extreme Cold Warning In Effect For Wood Buffalo

ImageAn extreme cold warning has been issued for north eastern Alberta, including the Wood Buffalo region.

Warnings have been issued for the following communities:

    Lac La Biche Co. near Crow Lake Prov. Park
    Lac La Biche Co. nearWiauWinefredand Grist Lakes
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Fort MacKay and Wallace Creek
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Fort McMurray and Anzac
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Gipsy Lake and Whitemud Falls
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Grand Rapids Wildland Prov. Park
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Janvier South and Conklin
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Mariana Lake
    M. of Wood Buffalo near Stony Mtn Prov. Park and Engstrom Lake
Environment Canada says with temperatures in the -30’s and light easterly winds this morning, wind chill values will hit the -40 range. The temperature is expected to rise by the afternoon.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

The weather agency notes the kids and seniors, homeless people, outdoor workers and people living in homes that are poorly insulated are more susceptible to hypothermia or frostbite.

If you have to be outside today, wear appropriate clothing.

Environment Canada says you should always wear clothing with synthetic and wool fabrics to provide better insulation. Dress in layers with a wind resistant outer layer, wear warm socks, glove a hat and scarf in the cold weather.
