Father Mercredi Trappers Bested By Holy Rosary Raiders For Second Straight Year

It’s been another season to remember for the Father Mercredi High School Football Trappers.

After claiming the city title two weeks ago – the Trappers were defending their turf in the Zones Championship on Friday against the province's 3rd ranked team in the Holy Rosary Raiders of Lloydminster.

Despite a hard-fought effort – Father Mercredi fell by a score of 24-7.

Trappers Head Coach Kevin Garbujo tells Fort McMurray News the loss came down to a lack of capitalizing on both sides of the ball.

"We executed as well as we planned to on 1st and 10, it was just we'd have a miscue here or there on offense that would hurt us. On defense, game plan was really well executed, but it was just a few missed tackles that kind of made a difference."

With 10 players graduating, Garbujo wants to see a bigger commitment from his younger players to get themselves in peak physical condition for next year.

He acknowledged the Raider’s overall physicality as one of the game’s deciding factors.

Garbujo notes despite several outgoing seniors – it will be imperative for those young guns to work on their physical development.

"That's a big part of it, it builds up the resiliency. That's what we need to get to, we need to become better athletes, better football players and that's just going to happen through development. We're going to have a younger team next year so, there's going to be lots of room for improvement.

Garbujo says despite the outcome – his team can hold their heads high for their efforts.

"I feel we left some points on the board. This was a very talented team and had we gotten through Holy Rosary - they're third in the province, so they're no slouches - we would've done some damage at the provincial level."

With Fort McMurray hosting the Alberta Bowl next year, Garbujo feels there's a good chance fans could see one of the strong squads our region - whether it be them or Holy Trinity, being the representatives from Zone 7.
