Federal Government Allocating Over $17M for Wood Buffalo Transit

Wood Buffalo is getting money from the federal government to improve the community’s transit services.

On Thursday, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi announced new funding in the amount around $17.9 million.

These funds will be spread out over the next 10 years and comes from a bilateral agreement between the federal and provincial government worth $3.3 billion.

Mayor Don Scott told reporters they intend on using every dollar they get.

“One of the examples we have is the transit turnouts we’ve already started investing in – this money is going to be put towards those types of projects.”

The new turnouts will be in Thickwood and Timberlea expanding on the facilities next to the Casman Centre and along Millennium Drive.

Scott added the funding came as a complete surprise.

“We were pleasantly surprised that it came when it did, we have a very ambitious mayor and council so we’re trying to get a lot of things done and this will help us move a lot of projects forward.”

Sohi also mentioned the funding is being split into four groups – transit, green infrastructure, community cultural and recreational infrastructure, as well as rural and northern communities.

He says the municipal and federal governments are in talks to see if more funding can be allocated for the three remaining streams.

“Mayor Scott has talked to about certain areas that do need some support so we will continue to work on those.”

Simply put, Sohi notes the RMWB is qualified to receive additional funding, however, there is no timeline.
