Firefighters Begin 75 Hour Rooftop Campout

Five Fort McMurray firefighters are now living on top of Tim Horton’s in Eagle Ridge for 75 hours.

Scott Germain, Jerron Hawley, Matthew Heikel, Adam Waldolf, and Derek Gervais climbed up the fire truck ladder on Wednesday to the roof where they will now stay until Saturday afternoon.

The group is looking to raise $40, 000 with all funds raised going towards five local social profits.

Charity committee member Scott Germain tells Fort McMurray News they’ll be accepting money in a boot that they’ll be hanging from the rooftop.

“People can come by anytime during the day or night, they put money in our donation boot, then we hoist it up. We even have some goodies for the kids, like fake fire hats and all sorts of goody bags.”

All donated funds go to the Fort McMurray SPCA, The Centre of Hope, Waypoints, the Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club as well as the Wood Buffalo Food Bank.

Germain says it’s a fun way for firefighters to stay involved and give back to the community.

“We’ve always had a pretty close partnership with these non-profits. Obviously, as firefighters, we do our best to help people on the job, but we feel it’s also important to be able to help people off the job. So, even though we are volunteering and are happy to do it, we just want to help people as much as we can.”

The 7th annual rooftop campout was originally set to take place in April but was postponed due to the passing of one of their members.

As a result, this year’s campout has been cut from 100 hours to 75, however, Germain is still hopeful they can reach 2017 numbers – which raised nearly $47,000 for the social profits.

Two events are also taking place at East Village Pub, there will be a pancake breakfast Saturday from 9 a.m-noon followed by a wrap-up party that night.

Firefighters will descend from the rooftop at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
