FireSmart Activities Happening Around Birchwood Trails

Supervised burns will be happening in the Birchwood Trail System over the next few months.

This is part of the municipality’s FireSmart vegetation management plan that focuses on reducing the fuel for potential fires.

Crews are currently working along the perimeter of area removing all dead, down, and unhealthy trees. They’re also pruning and thinning evergreen trees.

“Creating a FireSmart perimeter around the Birchwood Trail System is a critical step in protecting not only the trail system but also the homes and communities that back onto the trail system," said Jody Butz, Fire Chief, Regional Emergency Services, in a release.

“Through these FireSmart projects, we're able to take a high-risk area like the Birchwood Trails and make it significantly safer.”

This work will be creating organic debris which will be disposed of through the controlled burns.

The municipality will only start the burns when conditions are safe to do so and will also try and minimize the amount of visible smoke.

Over 20 hectares of land will be part of this phase of treatment, bringing the total in the Birchwood Trails to 125 hectares.

Some trails may be temporarily closed until work is finished sometime around March.
