FMFN Chief Jim Boucher Named 2018 Canadian Energy Person of the Year

Chief of the Fort McKay First Nation is receiving national recognition for his impact on the oil and gas sector.

The Energy Council of Canada has chosen Jim Boucher as the Canadian Energy Person of the Year.

The group sites his work in making an historicinvestment, along with Mikisew Cree First Nation, in Suncor’s East Tank Farm last year and successfully helping run the Fort McKay Group of Companies as reasons why Boucher deserved the honor.

“There couldn’t be a clearer choice for the 2018 Canadian Energy Person of the Year. The Energy Council of Canada’s nominating committee, board of directors and entire membership have long admired Chief Boucher’s tenacity and measured approach to both community and economic development,” said Council President Jacob Irving, in a release. “For over thirty years, he has helped see not only his people but also Alberta and the rest of Canada, through intense change toward greater prosperity. No one else knows more about balancing the challenges and opportunities of oil sands development than Chief Jim Boucher.”

Boucher is also the board chairman of the Fort McKay Group of Companies, which is 100 per cent band-owned and operated. These business ventures have resulted in an average gross annual revenue of $1.7 billion in the last 5 years.

This is the second recognition in recent weeks for Fort McKay and Boucher as they were recently recognized by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business as the Aboriginal Economic Development Corporation of the Year at their recent annual gala on May 10 in Calgary.

Boucher will receive the Energy Person of the Year honor at a ceremony in Calgary in November.
