Fort Chipewyan Asking for Local Grocery Store to Help with Food Prices

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation is seeking funding to support a new grocery store in Fort Chipewyan.

Tuesday night, the Sustainable and Development Committee met to discuss supporting the project. In the end, they will ask Mayor Melissa Blake to write a letter of supportbefore the organization goes to Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada forfunding.

As Food prices are often out of reach for the average citizen in the northern Hamlet, the ACFN is looking to build a second store owned by the First Nation.

The organization notes the high prices could be attributed to the costs of transportation, but also the monopoly held by the town's only grocery store.

The Band says opening another store would help diversify the economy and provide jobs for youth.

A Hydroponic Food Growing facility to provide fresh fruits and vegetables is also being planned.

However, there is no word on when the project would start.
