Fort McKay band councillor on trial for sexual assault

A trail surrounding the alleged sexual misconduct of a local band councillor starts today.

The 45-year old Fort McKay councillor was charged with sexual assault in June 2011 and will face a Court of Queen's Bench justice in downtown Fort McMurray this morning.

The claim also holds that the accused sent a series of explicit text messages and photographs to the alleged victim and another woman.

Michael Orr was suspended by the band council after he was charged but the Federal Court reinstated him pending the outcome of his trial.

The court ruled it was unreasonable to pull Orr from his post in public office, given the personal nature of the criminal claims.

Orr was also suspended after he and another councilor reportedly called for an investigation into questionable band contributions, an alleged $250,000 bonus provided to a band employee.

He was barred from meetings starting in November 2010, but a federal judge ruled in his favour in January of 2011.
