Fort McMurray #468 First Nation Looking to Build Cannabis Facility

A local Indigenous group is looking to open one of the region’s first cannabis production facilities.

Back in November 2017, the Fort McMurray #468 First Nation entered into an agreement with Vancouver Based company RavenQuest BioMed Inc. to build the 24,000 square foot site.

The facility would be located on the First Nation, outside of Anzac, along Highway 881.
CEO of the First Nation Brad Callihoo tells Fort McMurray News with the economic downturn, and uncertainties with the oil and gas sector, marijuana seemed like the best option to help with the local economy.

“The responsibility of Chief and Council is to be a self-efficient nation for the next seven generations – how do we do that, economic development. Oil and gas are great in our own backyards when oil prices are great but outside of that if we don’t diversify we’re obviously going to be tied to oil and gas.”

According to Callihoo, this facility will also be the first to be owned and operated by a First Nation.

He says they’re leading the way for more Indigenous communities to look a marijuana as a valuable money resource.

“Indigenous communities and the cannabis sector can work hand in hand and help these nations come out of the poverty-stricken reserves that they’re on.”

Right now, they’re currently in the process of getting a medical marijuana license and will also look at taking advantage of when it becomes legal during the summer.

“We’re positioning ourselves to be able to take advantage of the recreational when it becomes available to the region, to Canada.”

Construction on the facility is expected to start in May or June.
