Fort McMurray Airport Wins Governor General’s Medal For Outstanding Architecture

The Fort McMurray International Airport is one of 12 projects in Canada to receive the 2018 Governor General’s Medal for outstanding architecture.

The airport has seen a number of changes over the last few undergoing a major renovation with a new terminal opening in 2014. At the helm of the design and also receiving a nod is the office of mcfarlane biggar architects + designers.

When making its decision, the jury considered a number of elements including conceptual clarity, compatibility with the site, detailing, innovation and uniqueness, and sustainable design.

The jury said the design of the International Airport successfully addresses almost every element of the programme, from the graphically superior wayfinding, to the discreetly embedded garbage and recycling bins, to the passenger areas carefully organized to create a sense of calm and comfort.

President and CEO of the Airport Authority R.J. Steenstra tells Fort McMurray News this shows the airport is a recognizable asset for the community.

“That really has a broad open appeal in terms of flow and passenger movement and the ability to provide services. This definitely gives us a canvas in which we can continue to build services and a light for the community, so it’s a great acknowledgment of a building that now has national recognition.”

Other recipients of the Medal range from the Borden Park Pavilion in Edmonton, Stade de Soccer de Montral in Montreal, and the Rabbit Snare Gorge in Nove Scotia.
