Fort McMurray Boys And Girls Club In Danger Of Losing Vital Programs

Budget shortfalls may spell the end of a pair of vital programs at the Fort McMurray Boys and Girls Club.

FMBGC announced they would not be receiving funding from United Way this year, meaning they could be losing their youth and out of school programs – impacting around 60 kids and 50 families.

According to Executive Director for FMBGC Michelle Farrow – they will need around $300,000 in order to keep the programs running.

She tells Fort McMurray News they want to be able to continue displaying the positive things they do for youth in the community.

“We’re also encouraging potential donors to contact us and arrange a visit. Come on in, see what it is we do every day and how we impact these children in a positive way. We’d love to see people come in and see what we’re doing.”

Due to the shortfalls, the programs at risk of being eliminated are ‘ZAP Out of School’ program, as well as the “Limitless Youth’ program.

ZAP serves 45-60 kids daily during hours when kids aren’t in school, while ‘Limitless Youth’ offers an inclusive environment under the direction of a recreation therapist.

Farrow says the goal of each of these programs is designed to develop youth into successful young adults.

“A lot of families we serve are single-parent families and families who are struggling financially, so we certainly want to be able to continue to offer these programs. So, if we are able to overcome this shortfall – we can just go back to doing what we do best.”

You can donate by going to FMBGC’s GoFundMe page.
