Fort McMurray Chefs Win Gold at International Baking Competition

Two chefs from Fort McMurray are coming away with top honours at an international baking competition in Tunisia last month.

Lasantha Mendis and Sujeewa Thalagala were apart of a four-person team representing Canada that picked up two individual gold medals and the International Cup for bread making at the 4th Festival International du Pain.

The event featured teams from 16 countries, including Canada which was captained by Mendis, who works at Mount Logan Lodge, about 90 km north of the city.

He tells Fort McMurray News they had to make six different types of bread in four hours, using ingredients that represented Canada.

“We made bannock, a fried one and a baked one also, we created a new little bit because we had made smoked maple turkey bacon and we did a maple cinnamon bun with lavender.”

He adds they had a game plan going into the competition.

“But, when we go there they gave us very tough challenges, they wanted to see how we handle the pressure.”

The team was chosen by the Canadian Federation of Chefs and Cooks – they’re now deciding if they want to compete at the Culinary Olympics in Germany next year.
