Fort McMurray Terry Fox Run Raises Nearly $5,000 And Counting

Every year, millions of Canadians gather for the Marathon of Hope – in honour of the late Terry Fox.

On Saturday, nearly 70 people came out to walk, run and ride at the 37th annual Terry Fox Run at Birchwood Trails to raise money for cancer research.

Co-organizer for the Fort McMurray Terry Fox Run, Ted Doleman, who organizes the run with his wife Pat, tells Fort McMurray News donations are still pouring in.

"Between three and five thousand. Normally, we get more money as time goes on but for sure $3,200 yesterday and more donations online will show up later."

The run began in September of 1981 and has raised over 700 million dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Since the inaugural run, 760 locations across Canada have held the run and today, it occurs internationally in 39 different countries.

Doleman feels that it was a pretty good turnout.

"It was a nice family event, it was nice to see lots of people show up so, it was good. The weather never changed, so that worked in our favour and it was really good."

The National Marathon of Hope takes place next Sunday, September 17.
