Gaming Marathon Raises Funds For Stollery Children’s Hospital

A group of avid game enthusiasts are raising funds by doing what they love.

A 24-hour gaming marathon was held at Avenue Coffee Fort McMurray on Saturday to help the Stollery children's hospital in Edmonton.

The ‘Buffalo Mushrooms’ put on the event – stemming from ‘Extra Life’, a movement in the United States that hosts marathons for kids.

Co-Organizer Neal Barry tells Fort McMurray News he felt like this was the right thing to do.

“I think everybody wants to try and help kids out, we don’t have a children’s hospital in Fort McMurray specifically, but the Stollery is the unofficial hospital that we have for the area.”

This is the second such marathon the group has hosted. The first was held at his apartment and it was a great success.

People were given a chance to play board games, video games, and even try virtual reality.

Barry says a lot of people came by, had fun, and donated to a great cause.

“It was a non-stop revolving door, we had little games and events throughout the entire day, we had some live entertainment that came in – there’s been an enormous amount of support from the community.”

He adds there was never one moment where he got sick and tired of playing games.

“In the last four hours, and at that point, with less activity, it was definitely a little less motivation, you kind of get sick of doing the same thing over and over so we switched a few things up.”

The fundraising goal for the marathon was $5,000. Barry notes they don’t have everything counted as of yet but believes they should be close to the goal.
