Another candidate is adding his name to the ballot in the fall municipal election.
Incumbent Sheldon Germain announced this afternoon that he will run for re-election at news conference at MacDonald Island Park.
Germain is in the race as a Ward 1 councillor, campaigning mainly for families and promising to create more opportunities for people to be attracted to the community. One of his priorities is the development of the Northside Recreation Centre.
"It's a need on the north side of the river," says Germain. "It's a different complimentary service than that at MacDonald Island. Quite frankly, it compliments the work that we do here at MacDonald Island. So I just think that it's a big piece. Transportation and transparency in terms of our budgeting and listening to people, those are the things I have a track record of doing."
Germain says there's a lot to forward to in the next term, such as the completion of Shell Place and the Regional Recreation Corporation's vision of creating a one-pass system to access all municipal facilities. Although there are some things he believes council needs to improve upon.
"The council needs to take more of a leadership role," says Germain. "It has to start engaging the public and listening to the public. We've heard loud and clear from a lot of groups that we're not doing a good enough job. For example the Snye, the downtown arena, were examples where communication was ineffective.
Germain works as a Physical Education teacher and Vice-Principal at Holy Trinity High School. He and his wife Gerarda are both teachers and are parents to three children.
