Grade 12 Westwood Student Wins 100K National Scholarship

A grade 12 student from Westwood Community High School has won a prestigious national award.

Dhruv Patel is one of 34 students across the country to earn the Loran Scholarship worth $100, 000.

The 17-year-old says he feels privileged, honoured and very lucky to be called a Loran Scholar and he’s excited for what the future holds.

"Where do I even begin to explain how amazing, humbling, and grateful winning this award is."

Patel, who was one of 88 finalists chosen out of 5000 applications, traveled to Toronto earlier this month for two days of interviews as part of a qualifying round.

In an interview last month, he told Fort McMurray News it means a lot to be considered one of the country's brighter young minds.

"One of the biggest reasons I've done well is because of an organization I run called 'YouthComputing', which I'm one of the co-founder-co-president. As well, a lot of community involvement in Badminton. I play it as well as coach."

Patel is also on the Mayor's Advisory Council for Youth (MACOY) and is working on a major IT project for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Upon graduation, Patel says he’s heading to the University of Waterloo in Ontario to pursue a degree in mechatronics engineering.

“All in all, I hope to have made my teachers and mentors as well as my community proud, and thank them all for supporting me through the years."
