Gregoire Lake Provincial Park Getting $1.6M To Finish Upgrades

Around $1.6 million is still being used to upgrade Gregoire Lake Provincial Park.

On Monday, Minister of Environment and Parks Shannon Phillips was in Fort McMurray, however, her trip to visit the newly reopened park was shortlived due to the weather.

After the remaining funds, roughly $8 million will have been used in the area.

Phillips tells Fort McMurray News they knew, even before the wildfire, that it needed to be upgraded.

“People love that lake, they love to spend their weekends out there – people in Fort McMurray work hard and when they’re done with that they want some downtime.”

So far, the park has seen multiple upgrades including adding 30 amp electrical services to all campsites and two loops also having water at individuals sites.

“Thankfully, a lot of it didn’t burn down – the fire affected areas were mostly in areas slated for upgrades anyway, so that was really good news,” said Phillips.

All public buildings have been re-roofed and repaired from fire damage, the roads are repaved and widened, while new gazebos and extra parking have been added.

“We redid the boat launch, there’s a new playground out there, new day-use area, just those things that we really identified as priorities that would help people have a better quality experience when they get out there,” she added.

There are still multiple projects still underway including additional landscaping, adding signage, repairing the existing shower building, and work on the new central building that functions as a park office, convenience store, shower building and laundry.
