Highway 881 crash kills Fort McMurray worker

A 46-year old oil sands worker is dead, after a head-on collision on Highway 881.

The collision occurred Saturday night but has since remained unreported by police.

Lac La Biche RCMP tell Fort McMurray News, the victim was travelling northbound to Fort McMurray, when his vehicle swerved across the centre line, into the path of a southbound tractor trailer near kilometre marker 130, shortly before 6:00pm.

David Mertz of Cold Lake was pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic analysts called in from Red Deer were unable to determine the cause of the crash, but investigators say driver distraction could be to blame.

Unfortunately that was not the only death on that road that day. Seems like they didn't report the other one either.
