Holy Trinity Basketball Coach Returns Home For ‘Coal Bowl’

The Holy Trinity Knights Boys Basketball team is out in Cape Breton, taking part in one of the country’s biggest basketball tournaments – the Coal Bowl.

The Coal Bowl is an National Invitational tournament that takes place in Nova Scotia annually, bringing together the top high school teams from across Canada.

16 years after playing in the tournament himself, Knights Head Coach and Cape Breton native, Aaron Barrington is also back but this time, it’s behind the bench.

Barrington tells Fort McMurray News his career in basketball has now come full circle.

“It is pretty special that I get to come back to the Coal Bowl. Being here as a player and getting to come back and experience it as a coach with my boys – it’s a pretty special feeling.”

Barrington represented Nova Scotia’s Riverview High School in the tournament back in 2002, as one of their star players.

Now, as the Knights Head Coach, Barrington enters the national tournament, hoping his team can prove their 6-0 regular season record was no mirage.

He tells Fort McMurray News they have as good a chance as anyone to take top spot in the tournament.

“We have three kids who can definitely play at the next level, whether it be CCAA or CIS, they’re getting great exposure in this tournament. We had a couple of coaches talking to us after our game today, it’s great experience for the boys and us as a team and as individuals.”

The Knights continue tournament play on Wednesday at noon – provincial time, 3 p.m. Atlantic.

Games can be live-streamed here.
