Industry workers to garner biggest wage gains

If a new study holds true, industry workers are expected to be the biggest wage winners in the coming year.

According to a new forecast from the Hay Group employees, nationwide can expect an average salary increase of 2.9 per cent.

However, those numbers are inflated for the oil and gas sector where workers can expect a pay bump of 3.9 per cent, followed by mining at 3.6 per cent.

Analysts say these forecasts illustrate the increasingly high demand for skilled labour, but do not reflect an outright boom in the market.

The poll says the figures continue to demonstrate a clear divide between resource rich and resource-poor provinces.

According to a national survey, Alberta as a district will lead in wage gains across the country, with the average provincial worker expecting a pay bump of 3.6 per cent, followed by Newfoundland at 3.4 per cent.

Bringing up the rear are workers in healthcare, media and government which all hovered around the 2 per cent mark.
