International Women's Day being celebrated

A day to mark the achievements of women is being celebrated today around the world.

International Women's Day has evolved from a strategy to promote women's rights in the early 19 hundreds.

The United Nations says the days is a call to change as well as a chance to reflect on progress made.

A handful of Mix listeners dialed in to the station to speak about the women they admire.

"Single moms. They catch a lot of flack a lot of the time and they don't deserve it. They're working super hard especially here in Fort McMurray and they don't get the appreciation they deserve. I know quite a few of them actually and they work really hard," says one listener.

"I was born in India so Prime Minister at that time, Indira Ghandi," says another listener.

The U.N. first observed International Women's Day in 1977.

The theme for this year's celebration is "Equality for women is progress for all."
