Joint Oilsands Monitoring program collecting data, but not analyzing it according to review

The Joint Oilsands Monitoring (JOSM) initiative needs to do a better job of converting data into useful information.

That's the message from a new review conducted of the fledgling government initiative, which says the JOSM program gets a 'B' grade but can still do better.

Lead Author Philip Hopke says too often the mountains of raw data of air, water, and land pollution levels is not being analysed or interpreted into useful info.

The review recommends that the program regularly publishes reports on the data, and for the information to be made easily searchable for academics and the public.

JOSM is an initiative run by the Alberta and Federal governments, and is funded by the oil industry to gauge oilsands development impacts on the environment.
