Junior Oil Barons Weekly Update: Peewees Proving To Be Offensive Juggernaut

After suffering their first loss of the season – the Fort McMurray Peewee ‘AA’ Junior Oil Barons are looking to get back to their winning ways.

The Peewee Barons fell to the Grand Prairie Boston Pizza Knights 8-3 last Saturday, before bouncing back against the other Grand Prairie team the following Sunday, in a 5-2 victory.

Now, the 5-1-2 Barons turn their attention to this weekend as they get set to open up a six-game home stand against the Lakeland Panthers.

Head Coach Sean McFatridge tells Fort McMurray News he’d like use the weekend to establish some breathing room in the league’s Black Division.

“I think if we get a couple wins here, I think we can get some space and not have Grand Prairie and Fort St. John so close to us. We’ve still got two or three games at hand so that definitely helps but at the same time, having some room is what we want – to be up top.”

Despite the first loss on the year, the Peewee Barons are still running like a well-oiled offensive machine.

With 48 goals in just 8 games – they are still averaging six goals per game and they are only 2 points behind the division leader despite still having three games at hand on top ranked Grand Prairie.

Bronson Seymour continues to carry the torch on offence – with his 7 goals and 13 assists leading the team.

He’s followed by Quinn Szpak with 17 points, Matthew Noble with 16 and four other Barons who are averaging over a point per game.

McFatridge notes with this team’s knack for offensive prowess – a pair of victories this weekend should be in the forecast.

“We really bounced back and had an amazing hockey game on Sunday and that’s how we’ve been playing most of this season. So, we’ve just gotta do the exact same set up and do what we’ve been doing. We’ve got a couple of good days of practice in and we’re going to roll into the weekend.”

The Barons kick off their doubleheader on Saturday at Frank Lacroix Arena with puck drop at 6:30 p.m.

Game two is on Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Bantam Barons Look To Bounce Back

The Fort McMurray Bantam ‘AA’ Junior Oil Barons are looking to get back over the 500-hump.

The Bantam Barons suffered a pair of ugly losses last weekend – both 7-1 defeats at the hands of the Fort St. John Flyers to drop their record to 3-4-2.

After a pair of their worst games of the season – Head Coach Keith Breen says his boys need to recoup their confidence in order to get back on track.

“You tell them the truth,” Breen said. “Fellas, keep working hard, you’re a great hockey team, win shifts at a time, and periods at a time and fight the little battles and learn from those things. That’s coaching 101. You’ve got to have a look at the big picture and be able to break it down as you go.”

Ben Therrien, Carter Breen and Maddox Parker all share the team lead in scoring with 7 points each but Coach Breen feels there’s more offense on its way.

He adds that with the strong spirit this team possesses – he feels everything will work itself out.

“I think we’ll be a scary team for anybody to face in the playoffs, when we get there. But that’s a long ways away. Our kids will just take it one game, one shift at a time and we’ll see what happens after that.”

The Bantam Barons are on the road taking on SSAC Barbecue Country this evening – with puck drop at 5:30.

They’ll be in Leduc tomorrow to take on the Roughnecks at 11 a.m.

Midget Barons Enjoy Week Off

The Fort McMurray Midget ‘AA’ Junior Oil Barons have some time to collect themselves after splitting their past weekend doubleheader.

The 5-5-1 Midget Barons hosted the NEBC Yukon Trackers last weekend at Frank Lacroix Arena – splitting the series evenly with 4-3 decisions in each game.

They now have the week to practice and get re-focused, as the second quarter of the season gets set to get underway.

Gavin Galloway currently holds the team lead in points with 11, followed by James Dowd with 8.

The Midget Barons are in St. Albert next weekend for a pair of games – with game one against the Blues of St. Albert and game two against the St. Albert Source For Sports Crusaders.
