Keyano College Updating Mental Health Supports

Keyano College is reorganizing some of its departments, affecting a small number of its employees.

The changes are a part of a internal review which was initiated back in 2015 by the then Vice President of Academics.

President and CEO Tracy Edwards tells Fort McMurray News this will help enhance their mental health services for their students.

“We’re making some changes in the way we deliver our mental health services to make sure our students have good supports in terms of health and wellness.”

She adds their transition will help students through different means.

“So it’s not just intervening when students have challenges but we want to be able to put supports in place so they get help and they get educated around the kinds of issues that they might experience.”

Meanwhile, Edwards wouldn’t say how many employees were apart of the transitioning, however, she did note it is just a small group of people – with the college working with them directly.

In a statement sent to Mix, the college notes the changes will also help “increase access to clinical services on campus, and continue to support students formally identified with special educational needs.”

Keyano will also be adding two full-time Mental Health Coordinators.

Edwards notes they don’t have a timeline for when the positions will be filled, however, they’ve received numerous applications.

“They will be able to deliver the clinical kinds of interventions that our students need.”

These changes will also help get more funding from the provincial government as they look to improve the mental health supports for post-secondary students.
