Keyano Huskies Men’s Soccer Team Looks For Redemption At CCAA’s

The Keyano Huskies Men’s Soccer Team are in Nanaimo, BC, in search of gold at the Canadian College’s Athletics Association Championship.

The Husky Men are seeking redemption after losing out on gold in last year’s CCAA Finals to the Humber Hawks from Ontario.

Head Coach Murad Sukru tells Fort McMurray News that his team is confident in their chances and are using last year’s loss as fuel heading into the tournament.

He adds there are a few veteran Huskies who are extremely motivated by last year’s defeat.

“This year’s team is just as strong, if not stronger,” Sukru said. “They have a wonderful shot at bringing a National title back to Fort McMurray. The boys are gaining experience, especially to the 10 rookies on our team. Experience from playoffs and now Nationals and here we are.”

It won’t be an easy test for the 9-1 Huskies, who will face one of their toughest battles to date in the tournament opener.

Sukru says they will have their work cut out for them against an undefeated Holland Hurricanes team from Prince Edward Island.

“We are going to play our game,” Sukru stated. “They have a striker that’s very good, scores a lot of goals for them – I believe he netted 27 goals this year. So, we know where their threats are. I’ve seen some game tape and been studying up on their team. We just play our game, play the way we’ve been taught to play and we should come out on top.”

Sukru notes that tensions are high for his team as they prepare for their fiercest competition all season long on the national stage.

He feels those nerves will be a good thing for the team heading into the tournament.

“If you’re not nervous at this stage, for either coaches or players, it’s a good nerve – being nervous is good. We’ll get over it, the first 15 minutes might be a little rough but once we settle down, play our game, we should be okay.”

The Huskies kick off the CCAA’s today against the 12-0 Holland Hurricanes.

That game gets underway at 11 a.m.
