Lady Huskies Eye History After Sending Vikings Rowing

The Lady Huskies are one step away from making history.

On Friday, the Keyano Huskies Women's Basketball team (16-8) held off a valiant effort from the Augustana Vikings (15-9) on route to a 55-42 victory.

The win sends Keyano to the ACAC gold medal game, where they'll face the Olds Broncos (17-4).

Olds punched their ticket to the championship with a 60-51 win over the Lakeland College Rustlers.

Following the game, Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance says the girls laid it all out on the floor.

"Again, just showing our ability to overcome adversity," Vigilance said. "That's why I love this team, we're so resilient and we bounced back. We changed little tactics, went to triangle-and-two and locked them down. It was great."

Moiyan Toure overcame a tough first half, getting roughed up frequently in the paint by Vikings defenders to post 12 points and 18 rebounds - earning player of the game honours for the Huskies.

Vigilance notes that's the kind of performance he expects from his star forward.

"It was awesome. She persevered – kept her mind straight and didn't let the referees bother her. She stayed in the game and in the moment like we always talk about and she played awesome."

Georgia Sherstan also came through in the clutch, posting 11 points, while Augusta Kievisaite, Sarah MacDonald and Aaliyah Johnson rounded out the starters, with 9 points each.

Now with Olds on the horizon, Vigilance hopes his squad can keep the momentum going.

"Man, it's going to be a battle," exclaimed Vigilance. "Brittney Thibeaux (from Olds) against Mo will be a great battle. We want that banner hanging on our wall. We aren't going to be satisfied just knowing we're going to nationals; we want that banner."

A win for Keyano would bring them their first ACAC gold medal in the program's history.

Tip off for the big game is at 2 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
