Lady Huskies Flying High After ACAC Championship Opener

The Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team kicked off their quest for Alberta gold with a bang.

The Huskies were all business as they rolled out the welcome mat, only to show the Lethbridge College Kodiaks the door in a 75-57 Keyano win.

Aaliyah Johnson was electric earning player of the game honours with 21 points.

After a slow start to the game’s second half, Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Fort McMurray News the girls really turned in on in the fourth quarter.

“They came out really strong and we were not really ready for their pressure and I take the blame for that because I should’ve prepared. But we persevered. That’s what I love about this team – we’re so resilient. We bounced back, we never panicked, and we continued to do what we needed to do.”

It was an all-around effort for Keyano, who had five players hit double digits in points.

Moiyan Toure pitched in with a double-double, notching 12 points and 12 rebounds, Sarah MacDonald had 11 points, while Tyshaine Page and Augusta Kievisaite posted 10 points each.

For all those performances, Vigilance was singing Johnson’s praises after the game.

“That’s what we needed from her, just to play her game and be attack-minded,” Vigilance said. “When she’s attack-minded, she’s very good.”

Now the Huskies prepare for an opponent they have a fair amount of familiarity with.

Vigilance says it will be rinse and repeat with Augustana on tap for Friday.

Both teams were even in the regular season series, winning two games apiece.

“It’s tough, we split with them in the season. They are a tough team, we have to defend the three and match their enthusiasm. There is a roller coaster of enthusiasm over there, so we just need to match that and bring it.”

Tip off for Friday’s game is 8 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
