Laila Goodridge Wins UCP Nomination For Riding of Fort McMurray-Conklin

The United Conservative Party has their candidate for the riding of Fort McMurray-Conklin.

Laila Goodridge was voted in on Tuesday after 273 UCP members had cast their vote. She would go on to receive 52.5 per cent of the vote on the second ballot.

The seat was left vacant after former MLA Brian Jean resigned in March.

Goodridge says she’s looking forward to continuing making personal connections with the residents of the riding.

“During the nomination, I knocked on other 2,500 doors and I believe that’s what helped win this and I believe that door knocking and going out and talking to the voters is what’s going to win the by-election.”

Goodridge beat out Elizabeth Keating, Willie Hoflin, and Councillor Phil Meagher.

She will now be going up against another municipal politician as Jane Stroud will officially be named the NDP’s candidate later this month.

“What I heard overwhelmingly at the doors is people do not support the carbon tax, they want to see the pipeline get through as quickly as possible and they want to quality health care and education in this area,” she added.

During her victory speech, Goodridge said she’s anticipating the provincial government to call the election as early as next week.
