Lots Of Love For Little Layla: Girl’s Cancer Treatment Gains Community Support

A GoFundMe page has been started to help a little Fort McMurray girl receive cancer treatment.

Three-year-old Layla Cox was admitted to hospital back on July 2, when her parents Chelsea and Jamie realized she was having trouble walking and was dealing with pains in her belly and back.

Since then, Layla’s mother says the page – which was started by her friend Jenna Ricketts – has generated nearly $11,000.

Chelsea tells Fort McMurray News her whole world was turned upside down when doctors gave them results from their daughter’s MRI.

“We have three daughters and the most they’ve ever had, any of them, is a little fever. Barely ever been to the doctor before and all the sudden Layla’s so sick and it’s something that I can’t even fix. It’s hard.”

On Monday, Layla had surgery to remove a large tumour from near her kidney.

According to her mother, doctors believe she could have neuroblastoma – a rare form of nerve cancer – but they will remain in the dark until an updated diagnosis is made later this week.

Despite how scary it’s been, Chelsea says she couldn’t be more proud of how strong her daughter has been through the treatment process.

“She’s been such a trooper. Surgery on Monday and one of the first things she said to me was ‘mom, I was brave,” Chelsea laughed. “She’s such a big girl and she’s up walking, smiling, laughing and playing. She’s just doing so good.”

Chelsea notes the worst part has been the waiting process and not being fully sure what the prognosis for Layla is.

She says the positive aspect of the situation is all the love and support they’ve received.

“Knowing we have so many people who care, care about Layla and care about us and so many people praying for her day and night. They are all wishing her the best and she is going to get better, we know it.”
