“Man In Motion” Makes His Way Into Fort McMurray

A Canadian icon – best known as the ‘Man in Motion’, is coming to Fort McMurray.

The Wood Buffalo Regional Library Centre Stage Series is welcoming its latest speaker – 3-time World Champion, 9-time Pan Am gold medalist and 3-time Paralympic gold medalist Rick Hansen.

Hansen is best known for his 40,000-kilometre trek around the world – while in his wheelchair – and for raising awareness on inclusion for all people with disabilities.

He tells Fort McMurray News his appearance in Fort McMurray is all about encouraging a more accessible community and society.

"People with disabilities, whether it be visual, hearing, mobility or otherwise, they can actually move around and gain access. And of course, employment becomes a lot easier because fewer people are fearful of the barriers for accommodation because they don't have to deal with them."

Hansen says over four million Canadians deal with disabilities along with over a billion people worldwide.

He feels while Canada has taken significant steps toward accessibility - but are still leaps and bounds from being barrier-free.

"Start placing emphasis on removing these barriers so that we can actually stop paying for the cost of unintended barriers and confinement that ultimately limits people from participating in the workforce and in our vibrant economy."

The show takes place at Keyano Theatre tomorrow night – starting at 7 p.m.
