Mayor Blake says state of region is "strong and resilient"

The state of the region is "strong and resilient," according to Mayor Melissa Blake.

Blake spoke in front of the local construction association at the Sawridge today, saying while times have been tough the community has come a long way in the past two years. She listed the openings of additional bridges over the Athabasca, the completion of twinning along Highway 63, and the expansion of the Fort McMurray airport as things to be proud of.

She said that by reining in the cost of business, the Wood Buffalo region can more easily endure future oil crashes and continue to expand as a community.

"We've had a bit of runaway inflation," she said. "There comes a point of finality. If we are able to get the circumstances right, the cost of doing business in this community stabilized, we'll just be better, more stable and capable of enduring the next one when it comes."

Blake also called on community leaders to continue to be generous during the downturn, saying that they must ensure no Wood Buffalo family goes hungry during the holidays.
