McKay Métis President Running For Leadership of MNA

A regional Mtis leader is running to be the new president of the Mtis Nation of Alberta.

McKay Mtis President Ron Quintal is looking to bring a fresh face with new ideas to the MNA.

“There’s a real opportunity for inclusion of Mtis governance within Canada and I want to be able to lead that charge – I believe in my community I’ve been able to show that I can run a successful organization, a successful community government.”

Quintal tells Fort McMurray News he had no intentions of running earlier this year, however, he now believes there needs to be change.

“I feel that I have a much more progressive approach to how I choose to do things and that conflicted with the current leadership and I felt that the leadership is pushing the province in a direction that will undermine, and or hurt, Mtis nations across Alberta.”

If elected, Quintal says he would keep the MNA out of each nation’s business.

“I believe the Nation shouldn’t be dictating to communities how they should govern, it should be the other way around.”

As for other priorities, he notes he would trim down the head office and distribute the funds to the communities, make sure the MNA gets involved appropriately, and reconstruct how provincial meetings are held.

Meanwhile, his team is getting a legal opinion to see how to the McKay Mtis’ court injunction against the MNA could impact the outcome of their complaint.

“If I’m elected, that lawsuit will go away because I believe that I would change the policy that there would be no need for lawsuits. Communities shouldn’t have to sue their own government to bring change.”

Quintal adds one way or another they are going to get the outcome they’re looking for.

Advanced polls open on August 18 and the election itself is on September 18.
